NEW SAINSBURY’S THREATENS STOCKBRIDGE
Prominent Food Journalists Join Local Campaign to Save Stockbridge
Stephen Jardine, presenter of STV’s Five Thirty Show and “Eating For Scotland”, and Joanna Blythman, author of “Shopped –The Shocking Power of British Supermarkets”, joined other food journalists to support a local campaign to support Stockbridge’s unique blend of independent shops.
With Sainsbury’s set to take over the old Woolworth’s building, the local independent food retailers for which Stockbridge is famous – such as Bower’s the butcher and Armstrong’s Fishmonger, and the Costcutter that houses the only remaining post office in the area - are under threat.
“You know, this is just the thin edge of the wedge, ” said Stephen Jardine. “With a Sainsbury’s superstore half a mile away and Waitrose and Morrison’s even closer, what hope is there for small retailers?”
“Stockbridge is one of the top 10 independent shopping streets in Scotland” said Joanna. “If Sainsbury’s moves in it will hoover up trade from local shops.”
“I am happy to support anything to stop the further erosion of a once great shopping street now being destroyed by corporate greed and Edinburgh City Council's misguided parking policy” said Stephen Jardine.
Stephen and Joanna will add their names to over 2000 others on a local petition to “Keep Stockbridge Local” and to encourage residents to support their local shops. The campaign, supported by Richard Bath, Scotland on Sunday’s restaurant reviewer, Fiona Houston and Xa Milne, columnists and authors of "Seaweed and Eat It" is being run by Stockbridge and Inverleith Community Council.
